6pm Service Announcement

Made by Josh Taylor on Sunday, June 30 at 6pm Service

After much prayer and careful consideration, and with agreement from the Key Team and the Leadership Team, we have made the difficult decision to pause our 6pm Services.

This decision has not been made lightly, and I want to share with you the reasons why we have made it.

Firstly, we believe that God is guiding us as a church into a new season. There is a strong sense within our 6pm leadership and among a number of people in our congregation that God is inviting us in this season to bring our church, both morning and evening, closer together during this time.

One of the things we are sensing about this season is that God is inviting us to prepare a table for our church.

One of the beautiful promises we find in Psalm 23 is that God our Shepherd prepares a table for us, even in times of difficulty where tables don’t make sense. Now tables are a beautiful place: they are a place for friends and loved ones to gather, a place for hunger and thirst to be satisfied, and perhaps most of all, tables are a place to share our joys and share our sorrows with the people sitting around us.

Tables are a place for us to belong.

Therefore, what we feel it looks like to “Prepare a Table” in this season, is to create a space where we can make good memories with great friends, to create spaces where we are challenged and spiritually fed, and to create environments where we can grow deeper in relationship with each other and with God, who is always sitting at the table with us. By pausing the night service, we are extending the invitation to all of our South City members to come together in one service.

To be at the table as one congregation.

Secondly, we have recently experienced significant changes to our staffing at South City C3, and we have recognised that our resources have been stretched more thinly than usual. Our volunteers and staff have worked hard to run the practicals of our evening services, but we have reached a point where it is becoming increasingly challenging to those teams to continue doing what we have been doing. By pausing the 6pm Service, we hope to ensure that the services and ministries at our church continue to thrive without overextending our teams.

We believe that coming together in fewer, but more impactful gatherings will strengthen our community as a whole, and allow us to support each other more effectively.

It is possible that in the future, we may be able to resume holding Evening Services, but at this time we do not have a timeframe for that.

We are currently exploring some ideas around monthly worship nights, special events, courses like the Alpha Course, and strengthening our morning services, all of which are things we may be better positioned to do by pausing the evening service.

For all of these reasons, we will be holding our 6pm Services for 2 more Sundays, with the last service being Sunday, the 14th of July.

After that, I would wholeheartedly like to invite you to join us in the morning service.

In the spirit of our sense that God is inviting us to come together as a church, we are also going to be holding a special potluck-style dinner. This is an event our whole church is invited to, an event we are calling “Come To The Table”. It’s happening Sunday, July 28th at 6pm. We would love to have you come along to celebrate the beginning of a new chapter for our church together with us.

I want to acknowledge that this change may be difficult for you. For some of you, this service has been home for a long time. It certainly has been for me for nearly 9 years, first as an attendee, and now as staff.

The truth is, you’ve grown here, you’ve made friends here, and you’ve met God here. To those of you who have been a part of the story of the 6pm Service, in big ways or in small ways, to you I say, thank you.

Thank you for your persistent desire to grow, thank you for showing up for one another, and thank you for bringing the very best of yourselves all these years. It’s been a great honour and a great privilege to have walked with you here at our 6pm Service.

For some of you, because of your schedule commitments, you may not be able to join us in the morning services. This is sad for us, and may feel pretty sad for you too. If that’s you, I would love to help you and support you in any way I can in finding a place to plug in elsewhere.

Lastly, I want to say thank you for your understanding, thank you for your patience, and thank you for your continued prayers for us and our church.

While we are sad that something beautiful is pausing, we are excited for what God has in store for you and for South City C3, and we trust that He is leading us into a season of greater depth, greater fellowship, and greater closeness with Him.

Thank you for praying for us and for our church.
